"Crossing the Old Covered Bridge" "Alderson Broaddus College
overlooking
The Covered Bridge" "The First Land Battle of the Civil War"
A typical market day in Philippi during the early 1900's.
After all these years some things remain the same. The women visit and the men wish they had stayed at home! The Philippi Museum now stands in the location of the old depot. Trains still travel through our town on the same tracks. This picture shows our historical covered bridge, spanning the Tygart Valley River. Old Main, the first building of Alderson Broaddus College sits above. A sad and emotional night. This tragedy was followed by nearly three years in the restoration process at a cost of over 2.8 million dollars. The origanal image was an actual sketch drawn by H. Lovie, an artist that traveled with the troops during the war.
